Purchasing Satellite TV Equipment

Each day more people make the decision to get their television programming through a satellite. Satellite TV is increasing in popularity and that rise in popularity is expected to continue on into the future.

When it comes to satellite TV, there are many individuals who focus solely on the cost of getting the channels that they want. The price of a service is important, but so is the equipment that you plan on receiving that service with.

Satellite TV equipment can come from two different sources. It can come directly from a satellite TV provider or it can be purchased from another location. Where you get your satellite TV equipment will all depend on your personal preferences. Before you make a finial decision it is important that you educate yourself on the advantages and disadvantages of acquiring satellite TV equipment from certain locations.

Many satellite TV subscribers make the decision to get their equipment through their satellite provider. The biggest advantage of doing so is that the equipment can often be obtained for little or no cost. It is not uncommon for a provider to offer valuable deals and discounts on satellite receivers and dishes. This means that it is possible to become a customer without having to pay equipment fees.

The biggest disadvantage of getting satellite TV equipment through a provider is one that many individuals are not even aware of. The majority of satellite TV providers are not giving you their equipment; in fact, they are leasing it you. This means that if you decide to switch television providers you will have to return the equipment. This is something that many individuals do not have a problem with, but a problem may arise if the equipment is damaged. Damaged equipment or missing remotes may result in being charged the full retail price for each item.

The alternative to leasing satellite equipment from a satellite TV provider is to outright purchase the equipment. The most common place to purchase satellite equipment is from a traditional storefront retail location or online. Most traditional department stores and media stores carry a selection of satellite dishes and receivers.

There are a number of advantages to purchasing satellite equipment from a retail store. The biggest advantage is that the equipment is yours to keep. This means that you can take your dish and receiver with you on camping trips and other family outings without having to worry about being penalized should the equipment become damaged.

When a satellite TV provider leases equipment to their subscribers they tend to offer only the standard equipment. Buying the equipment from a retail store gives shoppers a larger selection to choose from.

Having a choice when it comes to purchasing satellite TV equipment is nice, but it can also result in errors. Not all satellite receivers are compatible with every satellite TV provider. That is why it is important to ensure that the two are compatible before paying for the equipment.

The price of satellite equipment is one of the most common reasons why individuals do not outright purchase their equipment. The average cost of a satellite dish and receiver, when purchased together, is between one hundred and two hundred dollars. It is important to note that the cost of a satellite dish and receiver will all depend on where the items are being purchased from.

Leasing satellite TV equipment and purchasing it both have their advantages and disadvantages. When deciding which is the best way to acquire satellite TV equipment you are encouraged to examine each advantage and disadvantage and then apply them to your situation.

How Satellite TV Works

Digital high definition satellite television is increasing in popularity, with Dish Network recently reporting crossing the 12 million subscriber threshold and growing, and there are probably more uninformed as to actual workings of satellite TV than informed. How does Dish Network make television programming so realistic in image and sound?

Dish Network, owned and operated by EchoStar Communications, receives digital satellite signals from their fleet of nine satellites. Plans are underway at present for EchoStar to launch their tenth satellite this month - February - increasing their ability to bring you more and better entertainment. Communications/television satellites orbit synchronously at an elevation of about 22,000 miles above the Earth remaining over certain land masses/areas so that a receiver dish can remain stationary on the side of a home or in a yard. The advanced research and growth of Dish Network is directly attributed to their continued enhancements in the area of home entertainment programming.

Dish Network obtains select programming from providers like Life Time, HBO, CNN, ESPN, Cinemax, Showtime, STARZ, and other sources. These providers, also known as 'uplink' sites initially beam their signals to the satellites. Dish Network's, whose broadcast facility is located in Colorado, satellites then digitize the signaling for quality, encrypt the signals, and then transmit a digital high definition rebroadcast to installed receivers in subscriber homes providing the best in home entertainment services. Each satellite has what is called a target area or 'footprint', and programming from a given satellite can only be received within that particular target area or 'footprint'. The 1980's and 1990's dish receivers were huge, some being about 10 feet in diameter, but now it is completely portable so it is easy to take your receiver with you as you travel in recreational vehicles or boats - just place your dish facing a Southern sky and signals are easily received.

This process allows Dish Network to deliver digital high definition and standard satellite services all over the world and to offer subscribers over 256 channels of quality programming plus 50 channels of Sirius music in CD quality clarity. Dish Network offers the most complete and diverse packages available with premium movie channels, 500 commercial-free movies each month, excellent sports channels, interactive gaming with local and national weather and traffic updates, multi-cultural international programming, educational channels, VOOM high definition channels, and children's and adult channels. A Parental Lock feature is included for absolute control in family viewing. Dish Network offers free equipment and installation and specified services for a limited time. As a gift to first-time subscribers, Dish Network includes a Digital Video Recorder - free - to further enhance viewing enjoyment. The DVR allows you to digitally record and store up to 100 hours of programming in 100 percent digital high definition imaging and sound. This lets the viewer record, fast-forward, rewind, and pause - even stopping live broadcasting for annoying interruptions - and then resuming with no problems. You can create your own instant replays with your DVR as well as a library of your favorite movies, sports events, or music.

Click on Dish Network now for complete information on packages and pricing. Comparison-shopping will confirm that you can have the best and most for about the same amount you are now paying for average television programming. Ordering is easy - online or by telephone. A friendly Dish Network representative will answer any questions, take your order, and schedule installation for a time that fits with your busy schedule.

Now you are informed as to how your new Dish Network digital satellite television home entertainment system operates.

Cheap Satellite TV -- Who Has the Best Deals?

Just a few years ago there was no such thing as a cheap satellite TV system. A decent system cost anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 for a satellite TV dish and the array of electronic boxes that came with it. Not only that, it cost hundreds of dollars to have a big-dish satellite TV system installed.

Today, because the satellite TV industry has become so competitive, dealers are giving away satellite TV systems to entice people to subscribe to their satellite TV service.

Even the installation is free.

So when it comes to finding a cheap TV system, you're in luck. They're not just cheap, they're free.

Satellite TV Systems

Here?s what you get when you subscribe to either DISH Network or DIRECTV's satellite TV service:

* A free satellite TV dish and mounting stand.
* Up to four free satellite TV receivers plus universal remote controls.
* Free professional installation of your system in up to four rooms of your home.
* Free DVR (digital video recording) receivers so you can record your favorite programs.
* HDTV satellite TV receivers (optional) for high definition reception.

 Visit http://www.TheSatelliteTVGuide.com to see the latest offers.

Cheap Satellite TV Service

When it comes to satellite TV service, you can pay anywhere from $31.99 a month for 60 channels of programming, on up to $93.99 a month for 215 channels.

Both DISH Network or DIRECTV's satellite TV service includes the following:

* More than 225 program channels with digital-quality picture and sound.
* Up to 500 commercial-free movies per month.
* DVR (digital video recording) so you can bypass commercials and record your favorite programs.
* HD (high definition) programming.
* Up to 60 pay-per-view programs per day.
* Your local channels with digital picture and sound.
* Commercial-free music channels with all-digital sound.
* Toll-free and online 24/7 customer service.

Note: DISH Network and DIRECTV offer special introductory programming rates for new customers. Click on the links below for current offers.

The Bottom Line

Getting the cheapest price for satellite TV depends on whether you want the cheapest service, or you want the cheapest price per channel.

DISH Network has the cheapest satellite TV service. Their starter package -- America's Top Sixty -- gives you 60 channels of satellite TV programming, including your local channels, for $31.99 per month.

DIRECTV's Total Choice program package offers the cheapest price per channel at $0.31 per channel ($41.99 ? 135 channels). In addition to 135 program channels, you also get your local channels and 31 music channels.

If television is your primary form of entertainment and you want a wide variety of shows, movies, sports, and news ... if you're tired of fuzzy reception and want digital-quality picture and sound ... if your cable bill is beginning to equal your mortgage payment -- then I think you'll find satellite TV is a real bargain.
